Ministry of crab - Case Study
Blk 6 Dempsey Hill, SG
BEFORE

Situated in the renowned food and lifestyle hub of Dempsey Hill, the space for Ministry of Crab was originally a vacant Pilates studio, presenting unique challenges for the design. The open, airy layout had to be adapted to include functional dining areas while staying true to the brand’s signature style.
Since the studio lacked back-of-house facilities, the kitchen, dishwashing area, live crab room, exhaust, and other essential infrastructure had to be built and seamlessly integrated into the design. This required thoughtful planning to balance functionality with aesthetics, particularly for the 6m long open kitchen, the bar counter and private function rooms, while preserving a sense of openness throughout the space.

AFTER

The design for Ministry of Crab focused on creating a unique atmosphere that reflects the brand’s identity and captures elements of Sri Lankan and Singapore heritage while enhancing the dining experience with a balance of comfort, privacy, and social interaction. The space was designed to be rustic, yet cozy and versatile, perfect for both large celebrations and intimate gatherings.
A 270-degree bar counter serves as a welcoming focal point, drawing guests in and setting the tone. The main dining area can accommodate both long tables for groups and intimate seating for two. By exposing the original wood rafters of the ceiling we added height and character, further enriching the space.
Private dining areas were seamlessly integrated using operable walls, allowing for flexible layouts without disrupting the restaurant’s open flow.
The restaurant renovation, under ASDA's management and site supervision was completed in only 45 days.
